Smoking is prohibited in most outside areas, including parking areas and pathways, all around the Clinic along with other health system structures around the Sacramento campus.

Any cigarettes โ€” including second-hands smoke โ€” has a health risk that there's no recourse-free degree of exposure. Although UC Davis Health System includes a lengthy-standing no-smoking policy in and near our structures, using this extra step provides our employees, patients, site visitors, volunteers and students using the extra protection they deserve.

UC Davis scientists will also be helping us understand much more about the negative health results of tobacco use. One prominent focus area is when smoking-related ailments affect different populations. We teamed with UC Bay Area this past year to document the very first time the way the tobacco industry funded and used research to undermine evidence connecting secondhand smoke to coronary disease. Together our scientists combed through nearly 50 million pages of formerly secret, internal tobacco-industry documents for that study.

There's significant support open to individuals attempting to stop smoking. UC Davis Health System offers a number of smoking-cessation possibilities, and we have enhanced our programs with the non-profit California Tobacco Control Alliance to ensure that our employees and patients have additional help once we go completely smoke-free.

"Among the other many advantages of relocating to a smoke-free atmosphere is it helps encourage a good quantity of people who smoke to think about quitting smoking."
